Changing your state

Greetings from beautiful South Africa.  My wife and I are in Cape Town after a few days in a bush camp near Kruger National Park. Being so immersed in nature immediately puts me in a positive state of mind. However, I don't need to go on vacation to change my mental and emotional state. When our expectations are not met or situations frustrate us, we may feel angry, sad or disappointed, which is fine for a brief moment. When life’s challenges and the stress we face daily put us in a negative state we have the power to change this.

Unfortunately, the way many people attempt to change their state is often unhealthy and unsustainable.   When you feel overwhelmed or uncomfortable with your thoughts and feelings how do you respond? Many people seek distraction in some form. It could be zoning out in from of a screen.  It could be alcohol or some other drug. There are many strategies we engage in, in an unconscious effort to change our state.  These can lead to bad habits or even addiction.  It is important to acknowledge how we feel and then move on.  Instead many people want to ignore their feelings and suppress them.

One of the original motivational speakers and personal development experts, Anthony Robbins, says he does not allow himself to remain in a negative state. He also teaches people how to change their own negative state.  There are many ways to do this and this blog is too brief to explain them in detail but I can point you in the right direction.

Awareness allows change! Recognising and acknowledging the state you are in is the first step.  Are you willing to admit that you are in a bad mood? What do you do to avoid spiralling into a deeply negative emotional state? Some people will listen to music that improves their mood. You could call a friend who can uplift you.  If you an experienced meditator this can help too.  You can exercise or walk in nature.  In addition, you can observe your thoughts.  Challenge them.  Change the subject of conversation in your head until you are in a better state of mind to find a solution.

Tony Robbin’s commitment to not allow himself to remain in a negative state is an important one.  I have caught myself stuck in negativity and although I have the tools to change it, I still need to remind myself to follow Tony Robbin’s example. We can all change our state. If we can reduce the amount of time we spend in negative states we will make better choices, have more success and most importantly experience more happiness.
