How do you start your day? Checking your phone? Having a coffee? We all have morning habits, influenced by whether it's a workday or a weekend. However, the way you start your day can significantly impact your life, your potential, and your happiness.
Many successful people have a morning ritual. They may not call it a ritual, but they start their day the same way every day. I, too, have morning rituals that vary depending on whether I'm traveling for work or working from home. Two constants in my routine are meditation and some form of physical activity. Meditation has a set duration, but physical activity can range from 10 minutes of calisthenics in a hotel room to 30 minutes of yoga at home.
Developing a consistent morning ritual can have a tremendous impact on your life. It's essential to choose habits that suit you. For some, starting the day with journaling about dreams or initial thoughts is beneficial. For others, it's getting outside into nature. Whatever you choose, ensure your morning habits nurture both your body and mind.
Start by reflecting on your current morning routine. How do you feel and what kinds of thoughts do you have? What would you like to change? If you begin each morning scrolling through your phone or reading the news, is this the best way to start your day? If you hit snooze repeatedly and then rush to work, is this the best start? The beginning of your day sets the pace and tone for everything else. Use this time to find peace and clarity, and engage in activities that energize or at least make your body feel good. Even a 10 minute routine done daily can make a difference.
Whatever morning ritual you choose, remember that you're replacing old behaviours. Be patient and commit to your new routine for at least 30 days before evaluating its impact. Prioritise this time even if you’re tired. If your habits support your well-being, you'll notice positive effects throughout your day. You'll feel better physically and mentally, and you'll likely experience more moments of happiness.
